The Return of the Met Gala by Aida M. Toro

With last year’s dosage of COVID 19, the world’s key events were cancelled, as social distancing was enforced. Now that COVID restrictions have been lifted as vaccination rates have increased, the red carpet was rolled out of the closet after a year for timeless events like the MET Gala.

The Met Gala’s story began back in 1995 when Anna Wintour organized it, and has been a grand celebration of fashion ever since. The exhibition is considered to be a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and has traditionally been scheduled to signify the opening of its annual fashion exhibition. Year after year, the glamorous event raises eight-figure sums, meanwhile, 2019’s edition raised a record of $15 million (£12 million).

The prominent gala took place on September 13th and was hosted by co-chairs Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka. This Met Gala is special as The Costume Institute announced a two-part event for 2021 and 2022.

This year’s exhibition is called In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, which will open to the public on 18 September. Per the norm, there’s a theme every year, and this year American designers along with cultural, political and social events which happened during the pandemic were celebrated. The timeless exhibition was curated by Andrew Bolton, which he felt was a grand honor to curate as the American fashion community has been supporting the Costume Institute since its core beginning. Therefore, he wanted the exhibition to acknowledge, support, and celebrate and reflect on the impact of American fashion as well as to revisit American Ingenuity,  which was the 1998's major exhibition that covered this specific theme.
